Preakness Stakes 2024 winner, payouts, results: Seize the Grey wins at Pimlico, Mystik Dan finishes

Seize the Grey is the winner of the 149th Preakness Stakes.

Favorite and Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan came in second, ending a bid for the first Triple Crown since Justify pulled that feat off in 2018. For Seize the Grey trainer D. Wayne Lucas, it's a seventh Preakness Stakes win and a 15th overall win in Triple Crown races. The win marked his first at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore since 2013, when he won with Oxbow.

The Justify and the other recent Triple Crown winner, American Pharaoh in 2015, were both trained by Bob Baffert, whose horse Imagination finished in seventh.

The Woodlawn Vase is up for grabs

The Woodlawn Vase will be presented to the winner of the Preakness this afternoon. It's valued at over $4 million, which makes it one of the most valuable trophies in all of sports.

The Woodlawn Vase is the first trophy ever created by Tiffany & Co. in 1858. The award is the oldest continuously contested trophy in the United States. It is only moved once each year to present to the winner of the Preakness Stakes. Learn more: https://t.co/qaeIhTcvEH pic.twitter.com/o3qzltycPB

Bob Baffert back at the Preakness Stakes

Legendary trainer Bob Baffert has been persona non grata at the Kentucky Derby for the last couple of years because of a suspension following his 2021 Derby winner Medina Spirit failing a post-race drug test. That three-year ban is up after this season, so he's likely to be back at Churchill Downs next year, but the suspension stemming from that incident at both the Preakness and the Belmont are up, and he has one horse, Imagination, in the Preakness today. He did train morning line favorite Muth, who was scratched earler in the week.
